Martine Rose Revealed as Pitti Uomo’s Next Guest Designer

By October 26, 2022Fashion News

Running on the 10th to 13th January in Florence, Italy.

When thinking of the biggest fashion city in Italy, it’s only natural that you’d pick Milan and for that, you’re not wrong. But before all the Milan Fashion Weeks, it was Florence that dominated the country’s fashion scene and the reason for that? Pitti Uomo – a biannual event known as the biggest menswear tradeshow in the world thanks to the 30,000 members that attend every January and June. Since its first edition in 1972, countless legendary designers have shown at this monumental event including Giorgio Armani, Yohji Yamamoto and Raf Simons. Fast forwarding to today, Martine Rose is the latest to be selected to show at the event.

“At the first meeting with Martine for the special event in Florence, we ended up talking more about family, schools, daily shopping and cycles of life in popular neighbourhoods than about fashion shows,” said Lapo Cianchi and Francesca Tacconi, Pitti Immagine’s special project heads. “Yet it was evident how all this was closely related to her work, a cognitive and emotional baggage that mixes with great creative freedom with social and cultural thoughts and that is reflected in her collections, where even the most conflicting inspirations and inclinations come to a solution, at a temporary coexistence and each time to be rebuilt. In short, a sort of inverse canon, a very interesting work of and on fashion.”

The British-Jamaican designer is set to unveil her Autumn/Winter 2023 collection in Florence for her eponymous label this coming January thanks to the global success she has achieved since starting the brand back in 2007. Her distinct design language that prioritises silhouette and subcultural references creates tension between attraction and resistance in the accepted aesthetics in menswear, marking her as one of the most in-demand designers of this generation.

Stay tuned for more on the upcoming Pitti Uomo event in January.
