"Celebrating the brilliance of our Blackness."
The 5th and 6th of August 2023 saw Black Girl Fest (often stylised as BGF) – the UK’s biggest festival for Black women, girls and non-binary people – make its anticipated return to Somerset House.
This year’s BGF took steps to make sure the community was at the heart of its endeavours, partnering with eBay to curate a celebration of Black women, girls, and non-binary people. The theme for 2023 focused on ‘enJOYment’, based on the lived experiences of Black women in the UK. While attendees were gently guided through space, memories, and identities coincident with Black Joy, their nostalgia opened up ways to integrate realities of the present and hopes of the future.
The curators conducted research that found 76% of Black women in the UK are most likely to start a side hustle or business compared to other communities. BGF and eBay’s Seller Academy provided a perfect platform to embrace Black culture and learn about the skills needed to succeed on eBay’s pre-loved platform. A number of eBay UK Seller Academy alumni attended BGF this year, which afforded attendees the chance to interact with entrepreneurs and see an eBay marketplace in action. The year-long partnership will see eBay UK support the BGF Founders Club with a training programme to equip its product-focused entrepreneurs with the right tools, skills and knowledge to sell effectively on eBay (the BGF x eBay Seller Academy Programme).
