The Best Looks, That Fit The Theme.
The 2024 Met Gala, themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” was a night filled with creative interpretations that in some cases were far too ambitious interpretations. There were however some unforgettable looks that walked the green and white carpet this year. Here are some of the looks that expressed the theme in unique and captivating ways, whilst exploring the design sensibilities that came with them.
Cardi B in WIDOWSWEN
Cardi B stepped out in an enormous gown by Chinese born, Antwerp based designer WIDOWSWEN, styled by the amazing Kollin Carter, the rapper was assisted by nine handlers up the hallowed steps of the MET on Monday night.
The concept? Designer Sensen Lii drew inspiration from the erosion of the garden in J.G Ballards ‘Garden of Time.’ The mounds of black tulle that made up the almost never ending train of the dress depicted the garden after the couple in the story had picked all the flowers, which essentially destroyed the garden. The Avant Garde take on the theme brought a sense of the theatrical -which Cardi B is so well known for- to the night.

Barry Keoghan in Burberry
Actor Barry Keoghan sported a look inspired by the Mad Hatter. The Saltburn star’s outfit was a dark moss green velvet suit with a top hat, channelling a “stylish and eccentric” vibe according to Burberry’s Creative Director. The suit, designed by Daniel Lee, was reminiscent of the Victorian era, a portrayal of Count Axel from J.G Ballard’s ‘A Garden of Time’, the concept aimed to redefine traditional tailoring in a way that suited Keoghan’s personality.

Tyla in Balmain
South African singer Tyla’s gown, explored the concept of time from the theme of the night. Quite literally made of sand, the gown was sculpted to the singers body from foam, whilst the train was made from organza, both were covered with a mixture of different shades of sand making the dress a vision to behold. A literal ode to the theme of time, Tyla accessorised the look with a sand hourglass, completing the outfit splendidly.

Bad Bunny in Maison Margiela
Steering away from the expected floral prints and flowing gowns, Bad Bunny surprised onlookers with a bold and unexpected interpretation. He donned a custom-made Maison Margiela ensemble that took inspiration from the Renaissance era. The navy blue suit, with its contrasting white stitching and vibrant red pinstripes down the trouser legs, was an elegant take on the theme.
Accessories further elevated the look. Black leather gloves lent a touch of mystery, whilst the massive diamond-studded earrings and gold-rimmed sunglasses with diamond-shaped lenses added a dose of Rockstar swagger.

Wisdom Kaye in Robert Wun
Wisdom Kaye’s fashion sense is as varied as it is daring. It was a thrill to see him grace the Met Gala in a custom creation by Robert Wun, another name making waves in fashion with his gorgeous and unconventional designs. Kaye’s striking red trench coat, with hints of decay in its burnt accents, embodied the night’s theme perfectly, blurring the lines between life and decline.
