Colour and glass.
The new PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE store in Aoyama opens its doors this Friday, 17 October, on Miyuki Street – situated next to the FROM-1st Building, just across the road from the original store.
Spanning three floors, the new flagship space in Tokyo’s high-fashion district showcases the world and creations of PLEATS PLEASE, the line established by Japanese designer Issey Miyake in 1993. The interior design was conceived by Tokujin Yoshioka, a long-time collaborator of the brand, who also created its logo and designed several of its iconic stores.
The new PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE / AOYAMA flagship realises Tokujin Yoshioka’s enduring vision of a translucent, light-filled space, defined by a striking interplay of glass and aluminium.
A rainbow of pleated garments, sandwiched between sheets of pleating paper, boldly decorates the first-floor walls – a vivid display of the brand’s signature pleating technique. Structured hanger racks, designed to make the clothing appear to float, evoke the lightness inherent to PLEATS PLEASE. Within transparent glass cases, fabrics are playfully rolled and arranged, offering a tactile expression of the brand’s joyful approach to design.
