After a lengthy absence the turtleneck sweater returns for AW12 and it seems the cosy, throat hugging garment has shed former negative connotations to become one of this season’s must have pieces. High Street stores are teeming with fine examples in a variety of seasonal appropriate fabrics and warm hues, allowing us to rest assured that this once relegated style staple is again cool, masculine and sexy.
With the recent launch of our ‘Get Styled Like a Celeb’ competition, we thought it only right to refer to some of the greatest men’s style icons of the past for some inspiration on how to pull off the turtleneck.
After all, who can argue with Steve McQueen – undoubtedly the embodiment of cool masculinity.
Here McQueen effortlessly combines the turtleneck with woollen trousers and a tweed blazer.
The look is finished off with the addition of a classic trench.
No feature on the turtleneck sweater would be complete without the inclusion of Miles Davis.
This shot of the musical pioneer reminds us of the sweater’s association with the avant-garde and a departure from the traditional shirt/tie combo.
Lounging with Robert Redford.
PAUSE pick of the high street for the turtleneck is REISS.
They also provide handy styling hints on their website, confirming that the key to pulling off the look lies in layering up in a variety of textures.

Conjuring up images of English gentry and the Ivy-League, the tweed blazer is a favoured autumn style essential that has been continuously revamped over time.
With rough knits, wool and layering taking centre stage this season, a tweed/wool jacket will add just the right amount of textural weight to your look.
Last year we saw TOPMAN join forces with Harris Tweed Hebrides.
Fortunately the relationship continues to thrive and the high street giant return this season to present a collection which reflects the quality and tradition that are synonymous with the Scottish brand.
By keeping silhouettes slim, the focus here is on the use of fabric rather than styling.
The devil’s in the detail and football buttons, collar tabs and button through patch pockets marry harmoniously with the luxurious ‘ancient cloth’.
The versatility of the tweed blazer means that it works as well formally as when dressed down.
PAUSE favour an unexpected mix of rough and refined – try combining tweed with a simple button-down Oxford, hearty selvedge denim and hefty brogues.
