History in the Making.
Pirelli has long released its annual calendar to fanfare, highlighting exclusive creativity paired with a star-studded lineup of first-rate celebrities. For the first time in its 50-year existence, “The Cal” has been shot by a black photographer.
Prince Gyasi calls Ghana home. He grew up with parents who were musicians in the deeply rooted city of Accra. He didn’t study photography but decided to spend his academic years focusing on painting, image making, and carving, all assets that he applied to his rendition of The Cal. For the 50th anniversary of the calendar, Gyasi called upon talents like Naomi Campbell, Teyana Taylor, Angela Bassett, and Tiwa Savage, among others, to serve as his inspirations. Each photo was meticulously crafted beforehand, with Gyasi spending more time on the drawing board than on a set.
His calendar tells the story of those who inspired him as he’s grown both as a creative and as a person throughout his 28 years on earth. Titled “Timeless”, Gyasi’s calendar aims to inspire and encourage the youth saying “I hope to let them understand that they can do whatever they want to do if they put their mind to it and they’re consistent enough.”
