Tremaine Emory’s Denim Tears continue to speak through their collaborations, & this latest effort with The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC might be their most layered to date.
Theming the collection around The Met’s new “Flight into Egypt: Black Artists & Ancient Egypt” exhibition & an illustration depicting the story behind The Great Sphinx’s missing nose, the collaboration looks to underline the many ways in which ancient Egypt has been a point of reference & identity for Black artists. The exhibition explores ancient Egypt as evidence of a great ancient African culture that ennobled Black identities, as well as the wide-ranging resonance of ancient Egypt in the African diaspora. Forming this sense of union in the exhibit, thematic sections trace how Black artists have employed ancient Egyptian imagery to form a unifying identity, loaning critical pieces from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean & Europe.
