The life of one of fashion’s greatest names, Marc Jacobs, is told by his dearest friend, Sofia Coppola, in her first non-fiction feature film. In a career that spans almost three decades, the documentary dials it all the way back to the ’90s.

At Perry Ellis’ 1993 show, a young Sofia met the ‘grunge-era’ Marc who wore a slicked-back ponytail and beat-up Stan Smiths. Both discovered a shared taste in music and appreciated each other’s sense of style. Across the decades, Sofia has been in Marc’s campaigns (for the Daisy fragrance) and has collaborated with him in special projects.

Loïc Prigent’s “Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton” (2007) may be the first documentary to showcase Marc’s artistry, but “Marc by Sofia” will provide a more intimate and detailed overview. From Marc’s time at Louis Vuitton with Kim Jones, to the birth of his own label and his iconic Spring 2024 show, every milestone of his life is documented. In the twelve-week lead-up to this collection, Sofia’s lens captures all the behind-the-scenes happenings whether it is fabric selections or last-minute decisions.

Alongside the documentary, a companion book will be released featuring personal conversations between Marc and Sofia. Archival, and behind-the-scenes imagery are captured across the 200 pages forming a kaleidoscopic transparency of the designer’s legacy.

The documentary will be released in March, while the book is available to pre-order via mackbooks.co.uk.
