The year of collaborations
As 2017 officially comes to a close, it’s time to look back and reflect on what blew up in streetwear fashion and predominantly changed the game. Supreme has had an explosive year, dropping countless collaborations month after month. The brand has achieved a huge amount of success throughout the years, undeniably, but this year was a game-changer for Supreme. PAUSE highlights some of Supreme’s best collaborations in 2017.
Supreme x Louis Vuitton
The Supreme x Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2017 collection is a collaboration between two of the most highly-respected brands within the fashion industry. The fusing of the two powerful brands’ values sealed the deal for streetwear. The collection has now earnt a certain level of respect; it has a rightful place alongside some of the world’s most luxury retail products. However, the rewards weren’t just reaped on the side of streetwear – Louis Vuitton saw their profits grow 23% after the collaboration, proving that the public received the whole collection with an incredible amount of love. The effects it had on streetwear, luxury-wear and the fashion industry as a whole further proved that the project was executed to a level of perfection almost unseen by any other collaborative venture (apart from maybe Nike and Off-White’s recent ‘The Ten’).
Supreme x The North Face SS17 Collection
On the 30th of March 2017, Supreme and The North Face added another collection of clothing to their long list of collaborative works that span back almost 11 years since 2007.
The capsule consisted of a Trans-Antarctica Expedition Gore-Tex Pullover, a Trans-Antarctica Expedition Gore-Tex Pant, a Trans-Antarctica Expedition Gore-Tex Fleece Jacket, a Trans-Antarctica Expedition Gore-Tex Big Haul Backpack and finally a Trans-Antarctica Expedition Headband. All of which were made available in black, olive, blue yellow and red in order to give the most avid buyers a chance to collect a matching set. Of course, since then stylists, celebrities, and general streetwear fanatics have all been making the most of the pieces, producing incredible fits and street-style shots that have been welcomely blowing up our Instagram feeds ever since.
Supreme x Lacoste
Supreme described Lacoste as a “status symbol amongst youth cultures worldwide.” This is why it was hardly surprising to find out that the streetwear brand wanted to team up with the globally renowned label to produce a collection that would be loved by everyone. The duo confirmed the collaboration after an image was leaked on Instagram of one of the pieces. After this, the public anticipated the capsule until the day it dropped.
The collection included a Harrington Jacket available in pink, tan, black and baby blue with a checkered inside, a pique crewneck, shorts and hat all available in the same eight colourways to produce a matching set, a long sleeve jersey polo available in a striped colourway, tennis sweater and finally matching tracksuit jackets and pants all available in two-tone colourways. All products feature dual Supreme and Lactose branding in a variety of colour schemes. The half cream, half red tracksuit became the pinnacle piece from this collection.
Supreme x COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT x Nike Air Force 1
On the 18th of May, we got our hands on the highly anticipated Supreme x COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Air Force 1 collaboration. The collaboration sported a white leather upper that wore screen-printed graphics along the sides and heels. Furthermore, Supreme and COMME des GARÇONS produced other collaborative pieces this season but we thought the climax of those was the Fish Tail Parka in Black that featured dual branding along the back.
Supreme x Nike Air More Uptempo
This season the collaborative Air More Uptempo became one of the most anticipated Supreme shoes of recent times. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen several influencers help drive the hype of the silhouette and the demand for the sneakers to grow. The piece features Supreme’s “World Famous” branding on the laces’ as well as co-branding found on each insole. However, the main selling point was the swapping of the words “AIR” that is conventionally found on each lateral and medial side with the word Supreme which instead wrapped around each entire shoe. This was a rarity and slingshotted the pair into the limelight that caused thousands of sneakerheads to pick up the piece around the world.
Supreme x Scarface
The globally renowned film, Scarface, is a 1983 production about a character named Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant that arrived in Miami during the most active era of the area’s cocaine boom. The cult classic was written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma and has become many people’s most beloved film. How did Supreme do the movie justice in their collaboration?
The capsule included designs that were either film art, screen grabs or a description of the film itself. As for product types, it included t-shirts, a leather jacket, a sweater, a hockey jersey, hoodies, beanies, skate decks and a “The World Is Yours” desk lamp.
