Streetwear brand Supreme have teamed up with historical American artist Roy DeCarava for Spring 2022, unveiling a small capsule of garments.
Supreme have looked to DeCavara for this season to represent a deeper look at American photography, using his work as a platform to do so. Over a 60 year timespan, DeCarava created tonal, evocative photographs of life in his native city and beyond, often drawing from his experiences as an African American man. The famous photographer’s images were first exhibited in New York in 1950, and two years later he became the first African American photographer to win a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Throughout his illustrious career, DeCarava put the advancement of fine art photography above all else, propping up generations of photographers. From 1955 to 1957, he established and ran The Photographer’s Gallery, which was the first gallery in the country to focus exclusively on American fine art photography.
The collaboration with Supreme looks to celebrate this legacy, highlighting his work on a selection of three pieces; a hooded sweatshirt and two t-shirts. The former looks to be the standout, putting toward a simple white hoodie with a black and white image of historical civil rights activist Malcolm X.
The Supreme x Roy DeCarava capsule is set to arrive on May 19th via the Supreme website.
