PAUSE Highlights: Why is Everyone Obsessed with Beach-Ready Footwear?

Are we “doing beach” with our footwear this summer?

You might not like it, but ‘water shoes’ are in. We know, we’re as perplexed as you are. With what’s felt like a steady build-up in recent years, I think it’s fair to say that we’ve almost reached peak “beach shoe” popularity.

Fashion-lovers continue to crave new, more daring footwear silhouettes to pair and contrast with the rest of their ensembles, and we’re here to see where it goes. Whether it’s the allure of the sunny weather, the distinct smell of sea air, or just an infatuation with “sailor-core,” we can’t help but notice how much footwear continues to lean into seaside stylings in general… and some recent collabs have helped solidify this. For example, the viral Timberland x Jacquemus “La Bateau” Boat Shoe, Havaianas x Zara flip-flops, and newly-released Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance MT10T Sport Shoe have all had moments in the last few weeks, doubling down on the idea that, from now on, summer shoes have to have a bit of seaside personality.

In this day and age, what’s chic in street style is a get-up-and-go “roll out of bed” attitude towards the day’s outfit, and we think that has something to do with this shift towards beach-ready footwear styles having their time in the sun. It’s all about riding the wave.
