Ann Demeulemeester is a brand commonly associated with the Morticia’s of the world. Head to toe black with a sprinkling of drama and androgyny has long become Demeulemeester calling card. Perhaps even more so under Sébastien Meunier.
For SS17′, we see Meunier’s take on the charmed notion of love, it’s fragility and the shrinking violet demeanour associated with the powerful emotion. Bar the odd flashes of red, white and navy blue it was business as usual for the eponymous brand. Dramatic silhouettes, textural fabrics and an accoutrement of beads and ruffles make up for the lack of colour – as any colourless collection would.
With deconstructed knitwear, flowing silk blouses and a chiffon vest with the words ‘I AM RED WITH LOVE’ emblazoned across the front setting the basis of the collection; making the romantic direction evident from the outset. When Sébastien spoke to Luke Leitch backstage, he answered “Love is a colourful emotion for me. And we can say also I am black with love. But we blush and we become a bit red when we are in love” – only at Ann Demeulemeester.
