The Walter Van Beirendonck show kicked off Paris Fashion Week like no other. A large unassuming warehouse space with a white curtain at one end, the show began with off the curtain falling to reveal a strange, pagan-inspired band wearing full monster costumes and shuffling to the beat of old traditional Austrian music.
A slogan-heavy collection, images were planted onto laid-back tailoring, oversized outerwear, reflective bombers alongside a host of other wardrobe essentials, telling of Walter’s view of our ‘doomed world’, while simultaneously leaving a lot open to personal perception.
In great contrast to Dries Van Noten’s (another of the famous Antwerp six) who opted for a more straightforward, staple heavy ensemble – Walter’s artistic expression of the current global landscape was as appropriate as ever.
