Featuring a surprising accessory.
Kim Jones, the Dior Men’s creative director, has always had a penchant for collaborations. Whether it be Matthew Williams and Daniel Arsham at Dior or his hyped partnership with Supreme whilst at Louis Vuitton. This season, for Dior’s Spring/Summer’21 collection, the designer has once again pooled his creativity with a collaborator, in the form of Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo.
Presenting the collection via a video in which the Dior-clad artist discusses his journey and his unique finger-painting technique, as well as Kim Jones himself explaining why he chose to connect with Boafo.
The 36-year-old artists work is printed on the latest collection, with a portrait boldly covering the left side of two jumpers and ivy plants featured on many shirts and tops, a popular motif in Jones’ Dior that he was inspired to use from one of Baofe’s paintings.
Looking further at the clothing in the collection, relatively muted tones are contrasted with an acid green that features throughout; making way for the relaxed tailoring that Jones is known for. Long coats fall below noticeably short shorts, sheer floral shirts are layered over long-sleeve t-shirts and socks and sandals continue to be a trend.
The biggest surprise in the clothing is a focus on cummerbunds. The accessory is traditionally worn with a tuxedo and an example of high formality. In this collection, it is playfully remixed with pastel-hued colour blocking to match the rest of an outfit. An accessory that has been toyed with often by Pyer Moss, the cummerbund may be moving to become an accepted piece of casual-wear.
