PAUSE Highlights: The Resurgence of the Timberland Boot

Whatever the Weather, Timberland Reign Supreme.

Seemingly going hand-in-hand with each and every season, the Timberland’s Original 6-Inch Boot is the epitome of classic, having long been a mainstay in an array of rich cultural scenes. From New York’s deep-rooted affection for the stomping high-top to hip-hop’s longstanding love affair with the silhouette, Timberland’s 6-Inch Boot never ceases to rear its head as yearly trends begin to fade out.

Are we in a post-sneaker world? To an extent, yes… but not completely. Despite the recent resurgence of Timberland’s Original 6-Inch Boot, potentially suggesting the wave of sneaker hype may be on its way out, high-profile high-fashion collaborations with the likes of Nike, adidas, and New Balance have kept sporty sneaker silhouettes firmly in many people’s rotations. However, a post-pandemic landscape has very much seen the rise of alternative footwear silhouettes shooting to the top of the cultural pyramid, with the likes of UGG, Birkenstock, and Timberland being just a few brands to have benefitted. This most likely derives from consistently high price points freezing out many fashionistas from growing their footwear collection, especially with more mainstream releases, hence a more general attraction towards low-key silhouettes and brands.

In saying this, what, and more importantly who, actually drives a trend forward? In the case of Timberland, the answer no doubt lies in hip-hop.

From originators like Mobb Deep, Biggie Smalls and Aaliyah to trailblazers like A$AP Rocky, Lil Yachty, and Kanye West, hip-hop’s affinity with the Timberland Original 6-Inch Boot has been a longstanding one. Whilst the relationship between the hip-hop scene and Timberland’s standout silhouette may not have changed, the world around it most definitely has, and that’s where the re-emergence of this particular pair has come from.

Whilst many would rightfully argue that hip-hop has always been the epicentre of what’s fresh in fashion, this fact has never been more apparent than it is right now as rappers and hip-hop artists continue to cement themselves as modern-day rockstars. From Playboi Carti and his ‘Opium’ lead aesthetic to A$AP Rocky’s eclectic vintage ensembles, the hip-hop genre is as wide-ranging in its fashion stylings as it is in its sound… and the youth are tuned in. Working in tandem with TikTok and the wider social media landscape, the popularity of leading hip-hop figures and their one-of-one dress sense has translated over to young fashion lovers across the globe, leading them to chase similar styles and, more specifically, brands. Enter, Timberland.
