Demna Gvasalia’s Balenciaga takes center stage with their 53rd Couture Collection, a unique blend of streetwear, goth, and haute couture. The collection reimagines classic Balenciaga elements with a modern twist, emphasizing innovative techniques and a focus on the relationship between garment and body.
The collection features oversized t-shirts in luxurious fabrics and dramatic hats reminiscent of metalhead fashion, creating a captivating blend of audacity and sophistication. Gvasalia reinterprets Balenciaga’s classic codes, like the cocoon silhouette, while elevating everyday pieces with intricate handwork and innovative techniques, such as a t-shirt lined with black scuba satin and a hoodie adorned with hand-painted artwork by Abdelhak Benallou.
Innovation is central to this collection, with pieces like a dress made from upcycled plastic bags and a seamless leather dress held together by an oversized safety pin, highlighting Gvasalia’s exploration of new materials and couture construction. The finale gown, made from 47 meters of nylon and designed to dissolve after its runway moment, embodies the ephemeral nature of fashion and the collection’s spirit of transformation. Talking about transformation, big butterflies paired the garments as eyewear pieces.
