Why Luxury Purchases Retain Their Appeal Across Generations

By June 17, 2026Guest Post

Some things are just timeless. It’s a hard thing to qualify, but we see it everywhere: fashion, jewellery, art, music and more. Taste is an ineffable thing, and it drives us to find certain values in certain things across generations, as opposed to just at a moment in time or culture. It’s fascinating though, isn’t it?

It’s particularly fascinating when it comes to expensive tastes – and how some luxury purchases continue to hold their desirability despite ever-changing consumer trends. When so many things lose their lustre with the movement of the cultural dial, what is it that makes something timelessly appealing? And how is it that such timelessly appealing things retain their value?

What Gives Luxury Products Long-Term Appeal

The first thing to recognise, it would seem, is that not every luxury item has the same staying power. There are unmistakably gauche things that have failed to capture attentions beyond their moment; still, though, luxury items survive for generations at a much higher rate than more affordable consumer fare, and for some good reasons too.

For one, luxury purchasing decisions are often influenced by craftsmanship and heritage as opposed to short-term trendiness. Likewise, designing for this echelon of product is a task that attracts the best of a field – meaning timeless design and lasting desirability. It’s a self-selecting system.

The Growing Focus on Investment-Worthy Purchases

This self-selecting system has become a powerful vehicle for taste, and also for financial investment. Luxury items typically keep their value – a high value set by their quality and heritage – at the very least, making certain investments a powerful store of value. Meanwhile, others accrue value as they grow rarer, or as their timelessness is reappraised. Such items are worth the investment, for their quality and for the long life they guarantee.

The Role of Iconic Design in Luxury Markets

It is impossible to talk about the apportioning of value without acknowledging the central driver behind it: design. Classic, timeless designs are key to creating timeless value in an object, and there Is no better example than the world of fine wristwatches. Cartier Santos is an exemplary brand for timeless value, being that it has produced (and continues to produce) luxury products that maintain timeless relevance thanks to their distinctive design.

Why Timeless Style Often Outlasts Trends

As for what exactly makes a design timeless, this is a question that continues to spark debate. There are clear motivations for the timeless nature of certain luxury items, but when it comes to matters of pure culture or aesthetics, things get more difficult. Nostalgia is an obfuscating factor, as things come in and out of cultural focus; truly classic designs do not go out of fashion, though. They continue to appeal, to newer and newer generations of buyers, on a pedestal of heritage and prestige.
