Milan’s food scene is often overshadowed by Rome or Florence, but it deserves just as much attention. Alongside its old-school trattorias is a new wave of restaurants pushing the city’s dining scene in fresh directions. This time, we’re spotlighting two very different experiences: one a glamorous slice of la dolce vita in Brera, the other a quietly confident take on Chongqing cooking near Corso Como.

Gloria Osteria Milano

CUISINE: Italian      PRICE: £££

Gloria Osteria is Big Mamma Group’s Milan outpost, bringing a touch of la dolce vita to Brera. Set inside a beautifully restored 1960s-inspired space, the restaurant is filled with Giallo Siena marble, floor-to-ceiling windows and more than 200 velvet armchairs. The menu puts a contemporary spin on Italian classics, from cacio e pepe and slow-cooked ossobuco to monkfish Wellington, while the raw bar is well worth ordering from before the mains arrive. Whether you’re stopping by for lunch, dinner or just drinks, Gloria Osteria is an easy recommendation, whatever the occasion.

Il Gusto della Nebbia

CUISINE: Chinese     PRICE: ££

Hidden away on a quiet street near Corso Como, Il Gusto della Nebbia brings the bold flavours of Chongqing to Milan. Chef Lampo Wu named the restaurant after the thick fog that blankets his hometown for months at a time, with a menu centred around handmade noodles, plenty of spice and a handful of signature dishes. The century egg, spicy beef noodles and beer-marinated fried chicken are all worth ordering, while the intimate dining room, complete with the chef’s own black and white photography, keeps the focus on the food. If it’s your first visit, the tasting menu is the easiest way to experience it all.
