New York is a city best explored from the streets, and choosing where to stay makes all the difference. In a city that never sleeps, location is absolutely key. Located in the heart of Manhattan’s East Village, Moxy NYC East Village sits right within one of the city’s most characterful neighbourhoods.

Much like the neighbourhood it calls home, the hotel doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s playful, social and unmistakably New York, making it a great base for those planning to explore the city, yet still offering a stay with plenty in store.

A Lot of East Village Character

Moxy East Village is a true reflection of its neighbourhood. Designed by Rockwell Group, the hotel’s 13 floors were conceived as a loose timeline through different eras of East Village history, referencing the neighbourhood’s music, art and counterculture throughout the property.

That character is evident throughout the communal areas. The lobby feels more like a social space than a traditional hotel reception, with Alphabet Bar situated at the centre. Even the smaller details represent the local community, including complimentary books supplied by The Strand and vinyl curated by East Village institution Academy Records. Guests can even request a record player and vinyl for their room, a thoughtful touch that provides another way to connect with the city.

Location is one of the hotel’s key advantages. Moxy sits directly opposite Webster Hall and just a few blocks from Union Square and New York University, with East Village restaurants, bars and shops right on its doorstep. Complimentary bicycles are also available for those wanting to explore the neighbourhood.

Compact Rooms, Clever Design

Like many New York hotels, space comes at a premium, but Moxy makes clever use of what it has. Its 287 rooms have been thoughtfully designed to maximise space, with storage incorporated into the beds, peg walls, fold-away luggage racks and movable tables adding practicality without unnecessarily filling the room.

There’s also a good selection of room options, from Queen and King Rooms to Double Doubles and the Quad Bunk Room, which uses two sets of twin bunks to sleep up to four. It’s a particularly useful option for group travel, while accessible rooms are also available across selected categories.

Small details make a difference here too. The sink and vanity sit outside the bathroom, freeing up space and making it easier for two people to get ready at once. Large industrial-style windows invite in plenty of natural light and views of the neighbourhood. The rooms may be compact, but they offer comfort, functionality and everything needed from a city base.

More Than Just a Place to Sleep

Moxy hotels are known for their social happenings and East Village is no exception. Aside from Alphabet Bar, Café d’Avignon has guests covered for coffee, pastries and quick bites without leaving the hotel, while The Ready Cantina runs all year round, offering skyline views, Mexican-inspired bites and cocktails.

The standout, however, is Cathédrale, the French-Mediterranean restaurant that feels like an experience in itself. Featuring a huge 26ft triple-height dining room and an open kitchen, it’s a setting that feels grander than what you might expect to find in a Moxy. The menu is inspired mainly by Southern France, with influences from Italy, Spain and Greece.

Look up and one of the restaurant’s most impressive features reveals another connection to the East Village. Fillmore, the monumental wire-mesh installation by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi, was created as a tribute to the Fillmore East, the legendary local music venue once known as the “Church of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. It’s a stunning space and easily one of the hotel’s highlights.

A New York Base That Really Feels Like New York

Moxy East Village has the city hotel formula just right. The rooms are compact but clever, the location is ideal and there’s enough happening inside the hotel that returning doesn’t necessarily mean retreating to your room. Exploring the property should, in fact, be part of the itinerary.

More importantly, the hotel has plenty of that unmistakable New York feel, with a strong connection to the city and neighbourhood around it. From the East Village’s music references and creative history to the artwork, vinyl, buzzing social spaces and rooftop, it’s a true reflection of the neighbourhood’s character. For those looking to explore New York from a hotel with plenty of character of its own, Moxy East Village ticks all the boxes.

A special thank you to Elizabeth & Lolli for arranging a lovely stay and to Christopher, Bri and Lawrence for the wonderful hospitality!
