LCM: Universal Works SS14

untitled

When two classics collaborate, it’s bound to produce something special. Just the mere mention of the partnership of Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers with televisions longest running animated sitcom, The Simpsons, sends us at PAUSE into a frenzy.

The pioneering entertainment sitcom has always received bountiful praise and in its production of its 25th season, this collection of kids and adult custom graphics shoes is its first ever footwear collaboration. The shows dysfunctional family members Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson are featured in full vibrant colour-ways with the same sense of humour we know and love. The Homer Simpson All Star caters to men and features Homer over a black and blue background on the upper construction with his catchphrase ‘DOH!’. Also featured is his equally as well known line ‘Woo Hoo’ written in the Simpsons font on each side of the shoes white sole.

The Bart Simpson All Star features Bart as we first see him in the shows introduction sequence, in his orange t- shirt writing lines during after school detention. These lines are always something witty and in this case he simply writes ‘I will not waste chalk’ on a black (chalkboard like) upper construction.

This continues with the remaining characters, highlighting key Simpson characteristics; Marge Simpson’s tall blue hair and daughters Lisa and Maggie Simpson’s spiked hair. How could you not love them!

Held in the House of St. Barnabas, the location of the Mr Start/Mr Hare SS14 presentation evoked a sense of nobility. Mr Start showcased seven looks. Focusing on block colours and white shirts, the collection played with smart and casual, and paired them together. It produced interesting and alluring results; suits worn with sandals, and shirts worn with trainers. This collection whilst seemingly simplistic focuses on picking the right items to create a look. The pieces, worn individually or together, are very wearable. Also, the mix of smart and casual prevents the wearer from looking sloppy while remaining comfortable. Mr Start’s SS14 collection is perfect for those who have vague dresscodes to adhere to.

_SAM4917 _SAM4910-1

Meanwhile Mr Hare’s SS14 shoe collection deemed everyone’s shoes instantly unfashionable. Smart shoes were mainly in hues of brown and blue, and more casual shoes were more bright and colourful. The collection caused all kinds of shoe envy, and made us all think about upping our shoe game.

Just 5 years ago Brick Lane wasn’t the attractive area that it has become today. At the most there were a few stores where you can get your plimsoles and graphic tee’s for under £10. But what we didn’t know was that underground brands, bubbling with creativity were preparing to peak to the surface, making East London the place to be!

NLC 2

Among them was the ‘NEW LOVE CLUB’  founded in 2009 in Brick Lane has an interesting spring/summer collection which takes fashion by surprise! With their statement graphic as well as photographic prints they have become a hit for this summer. Having their brand put out in Topman, Urban Outfitters and Selfridges department store –  NEW LOVE CLUB are targeting the right audience and paving the way in print trends.

It’s obvious that the brand has drawn inspirations from different era’s in our time; hints of 90’s rave, wild crazy shapes and 70’s psychedelia inspired by crazy trips while taking LSD. It’s clear to see that the brand is growing from strength to strength with their increasing fan base with today’s youth pop culture putting a great spin on the classic tee, the New Love Club can certainly be expecting a massive influx of new members!

Cast your minds two months back, sometime in April. Men’s clothing line Staple was featured on here, about their partnership with Puma Suede, which you can see if you click here. It’s now come full circle, only this time in a very sunny Summer collection entitled ‘Spring Training’.

The entire collection features a wave of vibrant visuals in 5 panel caps, snapbacks, bucket hats, fresh graphic tees, short sleeve button up shirts, muscle tank tops/ vests and shorts which are all essential to make the pivot from winter wear to summer wear. These are must-haves whether you’re within the hustle of urban cities or on vacation in the distant tropical scenes of exotic islands. The trend colour schemes seem to be both khaki/olive green and shades of light and dark blues. There is no denying that immense blush of red used for the Red Terrapin Button down Shirt however. Altogether this season has been brightened up much more. The silhouettes of tanks and tees make easy casual street wear; on the other hand, the light weight button shirts and shorts can be worn as smart outer wear.

As expected the Staple pigeon trademark is stamped subtly on the garments, but that being said the star attraction has to be the African cloths, particularly the vibrant all over print Navy Terrapin Button down shirt, matching Navy Terrapin shorts and Navy Terrapin 5 panel cap in tribal custom fabric. Retailers have recently sought inspiration from the masses craving for tribal prints, tropical floral patterns and dynamic new colours. Overall, this collection is seriously impressive!

Wandering around the collections showcased in The Hospital Club in Covent Garden, one collection in particular stood out. For SS14, Universal Works is single-handedly bringing pink for men back into fashion. Asking the designer, David Keyte, why he has chosen pink for this collection, he was slightly thrown as no one had asked him this before. Strange, as the collection stood out in a sea of rather muted colours.

_SAM4989

“You could imagine wearing that jacket. You couldn’t imagine wearing that jacket if it was in purple, or magenta, it just wouldn’t be right. Pink works for guys” David says. Interestingly, he does admit that he “probably won’t sell a lot of that [the collection] in pink” and he does point out that: “in our collection we have a lot of colours, and pink is one of them”. However, wanting to make an impression and a statement he deliberately chose to show everything in pink to evoke a conversation about colour.

“Pink looks great on guys” David remarks. So why do few guys wear it? David offers the explanation that men need “confidence to wear it”. He also goes on to say: “colour shouldn’t be about gender. It should be about what looks good on you”.

Maybe Universal Works’ SS14 collection will inspire men to follow David Keyte’s advice.
