MOTOMORPHOSIS.
Okay, MSCHF has done it again and this time, they’ve taken two Lexus cars and completely twisted them out of shape. As part of “Metamorphosis,” a new exhibition opening in New York during Armory Week this September, the brand/collective has teamed up with Lexus for “MOTOMORPHOSIS,” a presentation centred around two radically transformed vehicles. The RX Plug-In Hybrid and RZ All-Electric have been stretched, twisted and pushed into abstraction, turning recognisable luxury cars into surreal sculptural forms. It’s exactly the kind of unexpected collision between art, design and pop culture that MSCHF has built its reputation on.
The idea behind “MOTOMORPHOSIS” is just as wild as the finished pieces. MSCHF takes its digital-native language of distortion and applies it to physical objects, manipulating the cars in ways that blur the line between consumer product and contemporary sculpture. The stretched forms reference the visual language of animation, particularly the exaggerated “smear frames” used to suggest movement, making the vehicles appear as though they’ve been frozen mid-motion. Lexus’ instantly recognisable designs become almost unrecognisable in the process, transformed into something strange, playful and deliberately impossible. And honestly, these are definitely going to look even crazier IRL.
