From YouTube hits to sold-out gigs, the highly talented Hobbie Stuart has come a long way in such a short amount of time. Spending long periods of last year in sunny Los Angeles finishing off his debut album, we caught up with the Brighton born singer to see what he would be getting up to this year and find out some Hobbie Stuart fashion advice, before his 2014 goes into overdrive.
So looking back at the start of your career you seem to have done quite a few covers that attracted loads of attention/views! Did you feel like this was the best way to give yourself a platform to show off your style as an artist?
People can find you very easily as people search for covers of big songs. The first cover I did was Rihanna ‘Only Girl In the World’ and people were searching it because it was such a big hit at the time. That’s how I started to get a lot of views, as well as Twitter followers and likes on Facebook.
I was at a point in my life where I was kicked out of college and working in a call centre and didn’t really know where I was going and I thought what do I really want to do with my life. Music is really the only thing I’ve put effort in to and really loved so I thought I’d just go for it. I thought I’d need some fans, so I made some covers and got some hits!
The ‘Still Here’ video has just been released and it’s a song which I’m sure people from all walks of life will definitely be able to relate to! We love it, but how did you come up with the concept for the song?
As I said, there was a point in my life where I thought it was too late to do something good and do what I want to do and be what I wanted to be, which ultimately isn’t the case. It’s never too late! I went into the studio one day and thought I’m going to write about that and put a message in the song.
The single isn’t too far away either, are you looking forward to finally being able to ‘show off’ everything you’ve been doing? Is there a tour we can all look forward to?
Yeah well my album is out later in the summer. My life in the past few years have been leading up to that, putting the hard work in and writing a lot of big tunes. I’m very excited for people to hear it! I’m doing a tour in April.
Moving onto fashion, how would you class your dress sense?
My sense of style is quite casual, quite basic. I like plain tee’s, some nice jumpers, I really like trainers, that’s what I tend to focus on! I like a nice plain outfit, but then nice trainers! I guess I’m a sneakerhead.
Are there any brands that you are enjoying at the moment, or is it more to do with how something looks rather than the label?
I place much more importance on how something looks and how it makes me feel. I like a good fit and a good quality of material. I am into brands, but I don’t buy something because of a certain name. I like Diesel. I’ve got some Diesel trainers on actually and this jacket! I’ve always liked Topman because they’re always quite standard and do the job.
Give us a Hobbie Stuart style tip…
Wear the clothes and don’t let the clothes wear you…
Many people have deemed this ‘your year’, do you feel like 2014 is going to be a busy year for you?
Very! Hopefully successful, but it’s certainly going to be busy. So it’s the tour in April, the album launch in the summer and then the first single on the 23rd Feb, with the video out now on Vimeo and YouTube.
What are your personal highlights of 2013 and your targets for this year?
Finishing my album and writing it as a whole, I was in LA quite a few times writing and that was a highlight in itself. I also had a big London show that went down really well, I sold out at The Garage, which was one of the best nights of the year. Also, towards the end of the year I spent Christmas and my birthday with my family in Brazil and I had a great time because I’ve missed them a lot. I also went to Spain with a couple of friends, that was nice, the boys!
Finally, we’ve been asking artists that we’ve interviewed to sum up their day with PAUSE with one #hashtag, what would yours be?
I’ll say #freezing!
