With the standards of what a Londoner has come to expect in our expansive selection of cosmopolitan restaurants, the idea of visiting an establishment without flashy decor or some form of experience enhancing gimmick is becoming exponentially infrequent.

Taking things in a refreshingly pared back direction, Cigala restaurant in Bloomsbury does just that. A quintessentially Spanish restaurant that offers up a delightful range of national and regional cuisine native to the region. Owned by the former head chef at the River Café, Jake Hodges, the restaurant prides itself on using the finest ingredients to form appetising dishes devised from his many years of travelling around Spain.

Discreet, understated and frequented by celebrity clientele like Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Everett and Hugh Grant; it’s fair to say, despite this, the food is very much still the star here. Delectable paellas, mouthwatering mushroom croquettes and an extensive range of delicious seafood and tapas are all complemented by a well-curated selection of wines & spirits.

In essence, it’s a perfect location for a cosy, warmly lit dinner (date night perfection?) or a catch-up supper with some close friends. It’s a friendly, accessible and relatively undiscovered gem that takes the faff out of eating and brings it back to what’s important – good food, great company and nice surroundings.
