PAUSE Visits: The Hilton on Park Lane

When it comes to globally acclaimed hotel chains, few are as widely known as the Hilton. Ranging from a convenient, contemporary airport pitstop to the luxury Waldorf Astoria’s, it’s a brand that offers something for every type of traveller on every type of budget.

First opening their doors in 1963, the Hilton on Park Lane has been a mainstay to London’s top hotels for over fifty years (having just celebrated 55th birthday). With a colourful history and countless celebrities having passed through its halls, it possesses an innate connection with the capital – even the queen is rumoured to have an opinion… but we won’t speak on that.

The first surprise hits you immediately on entry, for a destination that’s over half a century old you really don’t get that impression. Classic, yet not beyond its years – think quintessential luxury with an injection of old-school glamour. With an impressive 453 rooms over 28 floors, you’d expect to wait a while for check-in, but the well-oiled reception staff make this as seamless as possible and you’re up to your room in minutes.

When it comes to the accommodations; from the classic guest rooms equipped with air conditioning, on-demand TV, minibars and all the facilities you’d expect, to the opulent suites kitted with all the above alongside separate living spaces, complimentary wifi, butler service (on request), access to the executive lounge and much more; the consistency of exemplary finishes and sprinklings of understated decadence is without fault.

While you’re in an ideal location to explore the city’s delights, there’s no shortage of things to do without ever leaving. With no less than three restaurants and five bars, we opted to try the kitschy tropical themed Trader Vic’s restaurant. With an impressive list of sumptuous cocktails and food that’s nothing short of mouthwateringly delicious, our only regret was not booking into the other two to experience was would undoubtedly be the same exceptional quality.

All considered, any hotel that passes the fifty year mark is typically doing something right, or in the case of the Hilton Park Lane, it’s doing something right – then surpassing expectations. A true icon of hospitality in London, it’s certainly one to add to the wish list.
