Heron Preston Repurposes Airbags Together With Mercedes-Benz

By September 1, 2021Fashion News

Celebrating 50 years since the airbag was invented.

American fashion designer and creative director Heron Preston is the latest designer to delve into the automotive world, coming together with German car company Mercedes-Benz to produce a capsule collection.

Created in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the airbag being invented, the collection is created using recycled airbag materials from the brands’ safety and crash-test research area. With sustainability being a topic that Preston has explored throughout his career, this collection presents how the restraints of eco-friendly design can produce conceptual and creative results as the airbag fabric is used to produce jackets, trousers and a sculptural cape with an exaggerated cinched hood.

Although these garments are concept-only, the two have also collaborated on a limited run of merchandise bags which will be available only via a social media giveaway with GOAT from September 10th. Furthermore, the inflatable set from the shoot below will be repurposed and appear as an installation at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin from September 6th-8th, 2021.
