Denim Tears has officially made its way from the fashion world to the museum. Tremaine Emory’s label is at the centre of a new exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art, bringing together the work, collabs and cultural references behind the brand.
Currently open to the public, “Tremaine Emory: Denim Tears from the Pool of Black Genius” will run until 11 January 2027. The installation looks at Emory’s creative output through Denim Tears, which he founded as a way to explore the history of the African Diaspora and Black cultural heritage through fashion.
Visitors can see work from the label alongside pieces by artists including Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Alma Thomas and Faith Ringgold from the museum’s permanent collection. Furthermore, the space also features contemporary artists such as Arthur Jafa, Hank Willis Thomas and David Hammons, bringing together the wider creative influences connected to Emory’s work.
