Is Virgil Abloh The Next Creative Director For Givenchy?

By February 6, 2017Fashion News

Is he ready for the plate?

Since Riccardo Tisci’s departure at Givenchy (after 12 years), everyone has been wondering who will be the next person to take on the big fashion house, Givenchy. Today WWD reported that a Givenchy spokesperson declined to comment about Abloh being a possible choice whilst Virgil also refused to comment but mentioned that he will hopefully be “leading luxury house.” Virgil shared with WWD, “My trajectory is to update and provide something new in the fashion industry by way of creating a project and using it as a case study on how to update a luxury house.”

Fashion houses are now taking on new young designers to shake things up and bring new fresh ideas, with Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga and Vetements, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Virgil Abloh is also known for his key signature designs at OFF-WHITE.

Last year Virgil told WWD “I have a litany of ideas that bring modern relevance, but also a financial vision on how these brands can be more successful in the space of luxury.” He also shared, “Off-White is sort of my résumé and it’s my laboratory to experiment with these ideas to see which ones are valid.”

Virgil Abloh has already caught the eye of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which owns Givenchy. Whilst OFF-WHITE was a finalist of the 2015 edition of the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, alongside Gvasalia’s Vetements.

These speculations could be true, but we won’t know until Givenchy confirms. Virgil has only been designing for his brand OFF-WHITE for a few years now and with fashion houses taking on new talent, this could tell us that Givenchy is ready to turn the tables.
