Balenciaga’s City Bag Gets the Couture Treatment

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut haute couture collection for Balenciaga gave the house’s most famous accessory a full glow-up and we honestly can’t stop thinking about it.

Two versions of the iconic Le City bag appeared on the runway, covered in roughly 40,000 Swarovski crystals, described in the show notes as a “Le City Bag Medium in shiny silver metal and rose gold crystal mesh.”

One version was scaled down into a mini silhouette, its shimmering silver metal and rose-gold crystal mesh catching the light beautifully during the outdoor presentation. Piccioli built the pieces around sculptural metal skeletons wrapped in crystal mesh, a sparkling reinvention of a bag with real pedigree.

The City first launched in 2001 as the Motorcycle City Bag under Nicolas Ghesquière, and became a staple of 2000s “indie sleaze” style and becoming an iconic piece. Over the years it’s spawned sister styles too, including Demna’s 2021 Le Cagole and 2024’s Le City reboot.
