Muller Van Severen Reimagines the Piano as Functional Furniture

Who said pianos were just for playing?

Belgian design duo Muller Van Severen is giving the musical instrument a whole new purpose with Pianos, a new collection of functional sculptures that blur the lines between furniture and art.

Founded by Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen in 2011, the design studio is known for its playful approach to everyday furniture, and its latest creations are no exception. The collection features seven one-of-a-kind pieces that take inspiration from the shape of a piano, transforming it into everything from cabinets and tables to benches and wall-mounted lighting. And while none of these pianos can actually be played, six of the seven designs feature opaline glass spheres that double as lighting, giving the pieces yet another function.

The collection will be presented at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Rome from 14 November 2026 to 6 February 2027, marking the duo’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
