PAUSE Visits: Shangri-La Jeddah

Inside One of Jeddah’s Most Elevated Stays!

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Jeddah is a city in the midst of major change, steadily shifting its reputation as a transit hub and repositioning itself as go-to Gulf destination. Set along the coast of the Red Sea, it is a place that prizes culture, heritage and good living, now amplified by the kingdom’s tourism initiatives to accelerate new waterfront projects, museums and hotels.

With Saudi’s Vision 2030 well underway, large-scale public works and private investment have transformed the Corniche into a lively strip, while the hospitality scene continues to expand at pace. Well-known international hotel brands are claiming their place across the city landscape, exhibiting design, scale and a sense of place.

As part of this shift is Shangri-La Jeddah, a hotel setting a benchmark for where the city’s luxury scene is heading.

The Shangri-La Jeddah

With popular locations across the Middle East, including the UAE and Oman, the arrival of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts in Jeddah felt inevitable. Founded in Hong Kong, the brand has built a strong reputation for its elegant, service-led approach to premium luxury hospitality and has become one of the most trusted brands by seasoned travellers worldwide.

The Jeddah property occupies a prominent position on the citys redeveloped waterfront, set within the upper levels of the 64-storey Burj Assila tower, one of the tallest and most recognisable landmarks in a city where high-rise buildings remain relatively few. Its opening in 2022 marked Shangri-La’s first hotel in Saudi Arabia and a significant addition to its global portfolio.

Situated on the North Corniche, the hotel forms part of a growing high-rise cluster along this stretch of coast. The lobby is airy, light-filled and grand in typical Shangri-La style. Known for merging subtle touches of Chinese heritage and hostility  with local culture across their locations, Arabian culture and local references are evident from the moment you enter. Marble floors sit beneath dark lacquered wood panelled walls, while decorative features are symbolic of the Red Sea, inviting elements of the city into the space.

Rooms & suites

The theme of inviting the outside continues on through to the rooms and suites, where natural light does most of the work in shaping the atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows pull the coastline into the space, especially on higher floors where the seafront feels almost within reach. As the sun sets over the water and the city begins to quieten down, it becomes clear why a sea-facing room with a balcony is worth requesting.
The rooms are where Shangri-La’s character really reveals itself. With 220 in total, spanning a range of categories from guest rooms to suites and serviced apartments, there is a clear emphasis on design, ambience and a sense of luxury.

Design leans into calm rather than statement. Muted blues, warm neutrals and subtle textures echo the coastline without becoming thematic. Marble bathrooms feel grand and spacious, storage is thoughtful, and layouts feel intuitive rather than formulaic. Everything feels well thought out, from the in-room amenities to the high-quality bedding and technology.

Suites take on a more residential approach, making them the perfect home away from home. Separate living areas, dining spaces and walk-in wardrobes make them well suited to longer stays or for guests who require, or simply appreciate, more space.
