Comme des Garçons gives us “Broken Tailoring” for Spring/Summer 2016, the title and design made by designer Rei Kawakubo. She explains her vision with this collection and view on tailoring “ the art of tailoring isn’t what it used to be, and to fix it, it must be broken”. In Japan they believe that what is broken is mended, and the way Kawakubo choose to mend the art of tailoring is a fresh new way of looking at things.
Imagine the traditional gentleman mixed with the young punk. We get classic horse and hound prints matched with excellent tailoring side by side with strong colour plaids. Each side of the fashion spectrum tries to win your attention, and Kawakubo used layering to skillfully play this game. The hunter print suits with slits letting the punk plaids show from underneath, impossible to ignore. One of our favourite designs was the asymmetric business shirt and tailored dinner jacket matched with shorts.
Looks like strong prints, silhouettes and bright yellow punk high pompadours is the way to go! This collection makes us see that great things can happen when we mix and blend opposites together. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
