Set just off Regents Canal in the sleepy area of Maida Vale, the Waterway is about as perfect a setting it gets for a relaxing spot to eat on a Sunday afternoon, or a weekday evening, or a… you get the idea, the setting is lovely.
While relatively unassuming and off the beaten track, it’s exactly these qualities that make the Waterway such gem – well, that and its exceptional terrace. Only recently refurbished, their expansive outdoor area is second to none.
When it comes to their food offering, it’s clear the location has had a relative impact on their menu choices with an abundance of fish and seafood options at your disposal. For those not so keen on the chicken of the sea, however, there’s no shortage of meat-centric options also.
Think fresh avocado tuna tartare and chargrilled squid, to begin with, followed by delectable mains like their honey glazed salmon, roast trimmed veal chops and confit duck leg; all of which wouldn’t look out of place in any overly-pretentious central London location – but you’re by the breezy canal instead, win!
A testament to the laid-back, yet classy feel of the location; the staff are similar in their approach. Charismatic and friendly, while not quite as casual as you’d get down the local pub, nowhere near as formal as you’d get in a high-end restaurant.
All said, we’ll definitely be adding this one to our Rolodex of secret locations. Whether popping in for a well-deserved tipple after walking along Regent’s Canal or a get-together dinner with some old friends, the Waterway is a surefire summer favourite.
