At PAUSE we think the Superbowl is as much a sartorial event as a sporting one with the style choices of the half time performance being as eagerly anticipated as the game itself.
The real news of last night was not the win by the Seattle Seahawks, Bruno Mars’ choice of a Saint Laurent Paris SS14 gold tuxedo jacket for his half-time show performance.
L’enfant terrible Hedi Slimane’s grunge glam-rock inspired menswear claimed another celebrity fan when his gold skinny-fit SS14 number appeared not only on Bruno Mars but all seven of his band, The Hooligans. The jacket proved SLP’s versatility, worn with standard fit tuxedo trousers in keeping with Mars’ 50s Elvis-influenced aesthetic rather than spray-on PVC as shown on the catwalk. This is no doubt a coup for Saint Laurent Paris who are fast becoming the go-to house for tween idols including One Direction and Justin Bieber.
The ‘Just The Way You Are’ singer’s 12 minute performance was seen by over 10 million people worldwide and generated 2.2 million Tweets. Mars was considered a controversial choice by some who felt that the act to follow past performers including Madonna, The Who, Prince and Beyonce should have gone to someone more iconic, however, Mars shot down any questions of talent with his performance, a hit with musical and style critics alike.
