Since its debut in 1971, The Met Gala has been a style institution and a chance for the best and brightest of fashion, film and music to showcase the finest fashion creations. Once firmly a girl’s game, 2014 is the year that the boys have firmly stepped out of the shadows. A round of applause for The Met Guys.

KANYE WEST

Although girlfriend Kim Kardashian’s maternity Givenchy was the talk of last year’s Gala, this year Kanye definitely stole the show. Doing his and hers Lanvin, Kanye looked like he was born to wear his classic black wool silk tail coat, matching tuxedo trousers, paired with a white piqué vest, finished off with patent black brogues.
A$AP ROCKY

Our best dressed of the night goes to a man who since the beginning of his music career has carved out a strong street wear aesthetic, modelling for label du jour Hood by Air and collaborating with Raf Simons, it’s no surprise that his first Met Gala red carpet appearance was not a situation A$AP Rocky was going to take lightly. Pictured here with model girlfriend Chanel Iman, A$AP shows that formal wear is his forte. A perfectly tailored Topman black long coat and skinny trousers worn with a 20s inspired shirt and waistcoat combo, the look was given a modern twist with black cuban heeled boots. The look is thought out without being contrived, and shows that there is always a place for your own personal stamp when it comes to black-tie dressing.

Captain America bucked the tails trend with satin-lapelled black velvet suit, complete with subtle satin piping down the trousers. The key to keeping monochrome interesting is the use of texture. A big look for the past season of red carpet events, the key to velvet is not to overwhelm it. Paired with a classic white shirt and offset with a chocolate-brown bow-tie, the look is simple yet eye-catching.

White tux luxe was a trend favoured by formal wear favourites David Beckham, Jay Z and Frank Ocean. The devil is in the detail, with all three accessorising the look slightly differently. Flying the flag for British style, David Beckham went for patent brogues and a monochrome pocket square, complimenting wife Victoria’s white gown. Jay Z opted for subtle velvet covered black brogues, matching Beyonce’s black Givenchy dress. Frank Ocean also opted for patent brogues, with the addition of a single silver ring and lapel pin. All three perfect examples of how to wear a sure to be classic trend.
