Is Fashion Getting Nonchalant?
Messy looks, distressed clothing & turned-up collars aren’t exactly anything brand new in the fashion world, but many seasons worth of nonchalant “IDC” & “just rolled out of bed” entries from fashion houses are worth taking a closer look at…
From Gucci’s models holding their bags sideways & trend frontrunners Prada crinkling shirts to Blumarine bringing up the waistline, there’s a plethora of brands looking to find new ways to make themselves – & their consumers – cool, casual & ultimately idiosyncratic, mostly by contesting traditional methods of wearing clothing. To an untrained eye, these curated messy details – which take a lot of close inspection – are bemusing & nondescript, but elongated sleeves, untucked collars, dropped shoulders, & trousers dragging along the ground all feed into what the people really want: an “I don’t care” attitude. With this, clothing becomes almost secondary & a sense of personal style begins to rule, with these unconventional dressing methods telling passersby that the wearer almost isn’t even trying, putting forward an air of naturalism & effortlessness.
