From South London to a national treasure.
Stormzy’s #Merky Films is set to co-produce the official biopic of Ian Wright, with Stormzy also attached as executive producer.
The film will follow Wright’s journey from the Honor Oak Estate in South London to becoming one of English football’s most celebrated players. It traces his difficult childhood, the guidance of teacher Sydney Pigden, and the years spent navigating rejection, fatherhood and Sunday League football before finally getting his chance to turn professional.
Directed and written by Tom Wilton, the project will focus on the lesser-known parts of Wright’s story, long before he became an icon for Arsenal F.C., Crystal Palace F.C. and England national football team.
The film promises to explore not just Wright’s rise in football, but the wider story around family, identity and perseverance, revisiting one of British sport’s most remarkable late breakthroughs.
