Maison Margiela/folders has been opening up the house’s inner workings to the world over the past months, first unveiling its internal digital archives before expanding into a series of exhibitions and experiences across China dedicated to four of its defining codes: Artisanal, Anonymity, Tabi and Bianchetto. Launched in February 2026, the project offers a rare look at the research, documents and creative processes behind the Maison, turning what would usually remain behind the scenes into an evolving public archive. Now, its latest chapter takes the story to Tokyo, revisiting the origins of the house’s first-ever store and the neighbourhood that has remained central to its identity for more than two decades.

Opened in September 2000 in Ebisu, Tokyo, the original Maison Margiela store occupied a traditional Japanese home before relocating in 2006 to a former electrical products factory just a short walk away. The address, 2-8-13 Ebisu Minami, has since become a landmark in the Maison’s history, reflecting its instinct for unconventional spaces, repurposed materials, and meaningful connections with local communities. Through archival imagery, memories from longtime team members and stories from Tabi collectors and Tokyo locals, the new folder explores the store’s cultural legacy and its relationship with Japanese dress. The next phase arrives on November 5, with a limited-edition zine distributed across Ebisu and in-store, alongside a cultural installation developed with artist Mio Suzuki and Les Manufactures Nationales – Sèvres & Mobilier National, on view until November 15.
