PAUSE Visits: Capella Shanghai

A Stay Unlike Any Other!

⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Few luxury hospitality brands have mastered the art of creating a sense of place quite like Capella Hotels and Resorts. Renowned for its intimate approach to hospitality, architectural preservation and bespoke service, the brand has built a reputation for transforming culturally significant locations into some of the world’s most sought after stays. With properties spanning destinations including Singapore, Bangkok, Hanoi, Sydney and Ubud, and accolades ranging from Michelin stars to recognition from some of the world’s most respected travel and lifestyle publications, Capella has become synonymous with experiences that feel deeply connected to their surroundings while delivering a level of luxury that is both personalised and exceptionally well curated.

Among the brand’s growing international portfolio, Capella Shanghai stands as one of its most distinctive properties. Blending heritage architecture with refined luxury, the hotel offers a unique perspective on Shanghai, one rooted in history, culture and a strong sense of place.

Capella Shanghai

Hidden away from the bustling streets of Shanghai within the Hengfu Historic and Cultural Area, Capella Shanghai feels remarkably removed from the pace of the city, with an immediate sense that life begins to slow down upon entry. While the surrounding streets remain filled with the energy that makes Shanghai so captivating, stepping through the gates of Jian Ye Li is an entirely different experience. Tree-lined lanes, landscaped courtyards and restored shikumen residences create a sense of calm that is both surreal and increasingly rare, particularly within one of the world’s largest metropolises.

Occupying one of Shanghai’s last remaining clusters of shikumen architecture, Capella Shanghai is unlike any other hotel in the city. The estate has been meticulously restored into a luxury retreat that celebrates Shanghai’s cultural heritage while introducing a more residential approach to hospitality. Accessible only to guests and residents, the gated community provides a level of privacy and seclusion that immediately sets it apart from the traditional luxury hotel experience. It’s an approach that has earned the property widespread acclaim, including the prestigious Two Michelin Keys distinction.

Throughout the estate, small details contribute to the feeling of escape. Water trickles from courtyard fountains, flowering gardens bring colour to the historic lanes, and the gentle sound of birdsong from the hotel’s resident birds creates an atmosphere of tranquillity that feels worlds away from the city outside.

The Villas

Unlike traditional luxury hotels, Capella Shanghai exclusively offers villa accommodation. Spread across restored 1930s shikumen residences, the property’s one, two and three-bedroom villas feel more like private homes than hotel suites, creating a stay that is both deeply personal and uniquely Shanghai. Arranged across five storeys, each villa features a private courtyard, generous living areas and an entertainment room, providing a level of space and privacy that is rarely found within the city.

Designed by the late Jaya Ibrahim, one of hospitality’s most respected visionaries, the interiors perfectly combine Shanghai’s rich heritage with a refined residential aesthetic. Traditional Chinese influences sit alongside subtle French detailing, reflecting the cultural character and layered history that continue to shape the city today. Rather than overwhelming guests with grand gestures, the design allows the architecture of Jian Ye Li to take centre stage, creating spaces that feel authentic, inviting and intrinsically connected to their surroundings.

The atmosphere extends throughout every villa. Spacious bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, smart in-room technology and carefully integrated amenities further elevate the experience, while private roof terraces offer a rare opportunity to enjoy moments of stillness above the city. Thoughtful touches can be found throughout, from Frederic Malle bath amenities, a subtle nod to the French influences woven into the estate’s history, to traditional White Rabbit milk sweets, which evoke a sense of nostalgia for those familiar with Chinese culture.

More than anything, however, it’s the feeling of staying here that leaves a lasting impression. Returning to your villa after a day exploring Shanghai feels less like checking into a hotel and more like returning to a private residence hidden within one of the city’s most historic neighbourhoods. It’s the kind of place that can only truly be appreciated in person.

Drinking & Dining

While Jian Ye Li offers a peaceful retreat from the city, Capella Shanghai’s dining offering reconnects guests with the energy of the surrounding neighbourhood, spanning everything from Michelin-starred cuisine to artisan pastries and handcrafted ice cream. The hotel is home to Michelin-starred Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, the celebrated French chef’s first culinary concept in Mainland China. Set at the entrance to the Jian Ye Li estate, the intimate 55-seat restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, showcasing Gagnaire’s distinctive interpretation of French cuisine within an elegant fine-dining setting.

Le Bar provides a sophisticated space for evening cocktails, while La Boulangerie is the perfect all-day stop for freshly baked pastries, savoury treats and café favourites. For guests seeking a more intimate culinary experience, The Lab offers a private chef’s table concept, where personalised menus are prepared using seasonal ingredients in a home-style kitchen environment.

The Capella Experience

A stay at Capella Shanghai extends far beyond its gorgeous villas. Central to the brand’s philosophy is the Capella Culturist programme, which connects guests with the city through a series of highly personalised recommendations and immersive experiences. Whether exploring Shanghai’s rich artistic heritage, discovering lesser-known neighbourhoods or participating in specially arranged cultural encounters, each itinerary is tailored around individual interests, allowing guests to uncover a more authentic side of the city.

Wellness is also an integral part of the Capella experience. Guided by the brand’s Auriga philosophy, which draws inspiration from the lunar cycle, Capella Wellness provides a restorative sanctuary within the estate. The space features seven treatment rooms, a vitality pool, floatation tank therapy, a salt-wall lounge, sauna and steam facilities, alongside a dedicated wellness studio hosting regular fitness classes and personal training sessions.

What's More

Part of Capella Shanghai’s appeal lies beyond the walls of Jian Ye Li itself. Situated within the Hengfu Historic and Cultural Area, guests are surrounded by decades of history, heritage architecture, independent boutiques, galleries and some of Shanghai’s most interesting lifestyle destinations, all within walking distance. The neighbourhood’s leafy streets and slower pace provide a different perspective on the city, one that feels distinctly local and deeply rooted in culture.

Back at the hotel, guests have exclusive access to The Living Room, an elegant communal space reserved solely for residents, serving everything from afternoon refreshments to traditional Shanghainese snacks. A carefully curated collection of independent boutiques and lifestyle spaces positioned at the entrance to the estate further reinforces the property’s connection to the local community.

Combined with its extraordinary setting and intuitive service, Capella Shanghai captures a side of the city that many visitors rarely experience, quietly redefining what a luxury city stay can be.

Absolutely Incredible! Capella Shanghai is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable stays I’ve experienced to date. Since departing, I haven’t stopped talking about the property, and it’s truly one of those places that can only be fully appreciated in person, as words simply fall short of capturing the feeling. The entire stay exceeded my expectations, from the peaceful grounds of Jian Ye Li and the beautiful villas to the genuinely exceptional service delivered throughout. I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced it and would highly recommend Capella Shanghai to anyone visiting Shanghai.”
