A legacy on display.
Virgil Abloh: The Codes is heading to New York, bringing the late designer’s creative world together under one roof. Presented by the Virgil Abloh Archive™ and Nike, the exhibition will feature pieces spanning fashion, art, architecture, graphic design and music.
The exhibition opens on 10 December, with nearly 1,000 items charting the former art director’s ideas across multiple disciplines. Original sketches, prototypes, archival documents and finished pieces will sit next to a recreation of Abloh’s Paris office, taking attendees beyond the final product and into the thinking behind it.
Finally, an interactive media lab will also give guests the chance to explore raw design files, putting the legendary designer’s open-source philosophy into practice. The concept follows earlier presentations in Paris and Miami, with this latest location continuing to share the tools and methods that informed Abloh’s work.
Shannon Abloh, founder of Abloh’s Archive™ and Foundation, said:
“As we mark the fifth anniversary of Virgil’s passing, this exhibition is an opportunity to honour his tireless spirit and how he changed the way people think about creativity, collaboration and what is possible. Virgil believed in opening doors and making knowledge accessible, and The Codes brings that spirit forward by sharing his process, his ideas and the extraordinary breadth of his work with new generations. His legacy lives on through the people he inspired and the opportunities we continue to create in his name.”
A series of workshops, performances and talks are set to accompany the event, with further details still to be announced.
Virgil Abloh: The Codes takes place at The Shed until 18 January 2027. Tickets go on general sale 23 October, starting at $25.
