Awake NY and The North Face are giving one of the world’s most recognisable puffers a fresh look. For their latest team up, the New York streetwear label has recruited creatives Omi and Alehsy Lambo to customise 50 Nuptse jackets, transforming the cold-weather classic into a collection of one-off pieces.
First introduced in 1992 as part of TNF’s mountaineering gear, the Nuptse was built to handle seriously cold conditions, with its chunky baffles and down-filled construction keeping things warm location. Named after a peak in the Himalayas near Everest, the jacket eventually made the switch from outdoor essential to staple, picking up a following for its oversized shape and instantly recognisable look across NYC and beyond. Over the years, it’s become a fave for collabs, including one in 2011 with Supreme.
Initially planned as an in-store affair, the release includes graphics depicting everything from spiderwebs to skulls to distorted references to the Big Apple. The jacket construction itself remains relatively unchanged, keeping its durable recycled nylon ripstop shell, water-repellent finish and cosy 700-fill down insulation.
