The Biggest Changes.
Fashion has undergone a cultural reset in recent years. It is not uncommon for women to wear androgynous fashion; however, men’s fashion has changed more significantly. As we surf through the years of androgynous and sexually liberated fashion trends for men, the spectrum of men’s clothing becomes more and more expansive.
2022, like many before it, was a big year in fashion. We saw the resurgence of uniform dressing, bold hues, unmistakable prints and of course the boom of Y2K styles. One thing was clear in 2022, the landscape of men’s fashion and style is shifting, and more men are taking fashion chances with their styles.
In today’s world, sustainable and gender-neutral fashion is the hottest trend, with many old styles being revived in creative and socially conscious ways. And Gen Z has taken things even further. There is no denying that fashion for men has taken a leap towards an inclusive and quirky world of floral corsets, waist trainers, pastel clay jewellery, and skirts.
However, the fashion machine does not stop. As we end fashion month, it is only right to take a look ahead at what trends we will see in men’s fashion in the new year. And as we gaze into the crystal ball, we’re excited to predict what the defining trends will be for the year 2023.
Gender Neutral Dressing
We expect to see a large number of men push the boat out with gender-neutral outfits this coming year. Designed without a specific colour or texture in mind, 2023 will undoubtedly mark a rise in genderless fashion. This garment is made in a simple manner to be able to fit a variety of body types, and it is fluid in style – it is neither inherently feminine nor masculine. As more men do away with the outdated notion of male or female fashion, we have seen an influx of men pulling out kilts, skirts, sheer tops – playing with shapes and proportions that aren’t typically for the figure. The lesson here is that clothes are clothes. If you like them, wear them.
Boxy Bombers
From COS to Gucci, the bomber jacket’s cool-factor has been around since time immemorial. A wardrobe staple that is instantly recognisable, it’s no wonder the bomber jacket continues to dominate the fashion space from season to season. A classic silhouette that will always be stylish, is now made even better with a cropped body, a neat-point collar and big puffy sleeves. The boxy bomber will undoubtedly be a buzzing trend in 2023.
Funky Hats
From Charles Jeffery Loverboy to the iconic Maison Martin Margiella, it’s evident that the funky hat craze is only just warming up. A whimsical and novel accessory that can elevate or play down any look with avant garde, innovative designs. 2022 saw a great deal of hat brand launches, ranging from plush, pillow soft fleece beanies to chunky crochet rabbit ears beanies. Get ready to see funky hats everywhere in 2023.
Western Inspired Double Denim 2.0
We’ve said it before but double denim is back in a major way. Pulling inspiration from the cowboy state of Texas, the Western stereotype is serving as the conquering aesthetic for 2023 style. Whether it’s Western inspired denim shirts from brands like Thom Browne or Dries Van Noten or Cowboy boots from Wales Bonner, the Western inspiration has infused itself into the design language that will be prominent in 2023.
Elevated Sk8er Boy
The JNCO Jeans, loose fitting hoodies, chunky sneakers signature combination of the skater boy look is making a strong resurgence. The trend is fuelled by the designs of brands such as Natasha Zinko, JW Anderson, and many others. There is no doubt that this trend will carry over to 2023.
