Take A Closer Look At The “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” Exhibition

Step Inside.

On Monday 5th May, The 2025 Met Gala unveiled the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion, the exhibition explores the legacy of Black dandyism and how fashion has long served as a powerful tool of self-expression, resistance, and cultural pride within the Black diaspora.

This year’s dress code, aptly titled “Tailored for You,” invited guests to interpret menswear through a personal lens, highlighting individuality, heritage, and flair.

Notable appearances included Rihanna revealing her third pregnancy in a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble, and Diana Ross making a grand return to the Met Gala after over two decades.

The exhibition itself is organised into 12 thematic sections, such as Ownership, Presence, and Freedom, each exploring different facets of Black style and its evolution. Artistic contributions from Torkwase Dyson and Tanda Francis further enrich the Gala narrative, offering immersive experiences that highlight the depth and diversity of Black fashion.

With co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky at the helm, the event not only celebrated fashion but also underscored the profound cultural contributions of Black creatives.
