PAUSE Forecast: Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

By January 4, 2023Style, Style Picks

The Next 'It' Shoe.

Whilst the Adidas Samba was having a moment in 2022, Onitsuka Tiger and its Mexico 66 model was quietly creeping into the scene as the successor to the ‘Blokecore’ staple sneaker. Previously seen as a more accessible alternative to the demanded Adidas silhouettes, the Mexico 66 has the potential to surpass that label and create a new lane for itself thanks to the wearability and versatility that, up until recently, has been overlooked by the masses.

The shoe shares similar aesthetics to the respected Samba with retro sportswear roots and suede mudguard on the toe. The iconic Onitsuka Tiger stripes seen on either side of the upper are a breath of fresh air from the oversaturated three stripes that are so prevalent in the mainstream at the moment. The exposed foam on the midsole is also a nice touch, giving the silhouette a sportier look and feel. Colourways are also far from scarce and diverse too, with the unorthodox yellow and black iteration (cleverly dubbed the ‘Kill Bill’ colourway) getting a lot of attention alongside the classic black and white versions that will forever remain a mainstay.
