A music festival, but not as you know it.
Over the years, Boomtown has evolved from a small, independent party, held in a hotel in West Gloucestershire, to a sprawling metropolis, amassing over 60,000 music lovers annually. With its unparalleled immersive experience and expansive storyline, it’s easy to understand how the festival has established a cult following. The site is split into themed districts that unfold a captivating narrative. Every street and building within the grounds tells a story, brought to life by hundreds of actors to play the role of inhabitants. It’s up to the individual in attendance to decide whether to engage with the underlying plot or passively enjoy the spectacle. Either way, Boomtown is a music festival like no other.

It doesn’t rely on big headline acts, keeping most of its lineup a secret. Many names, such as The Pharcyde, Damian Marley, SBTRKT, Ghetts, Katy B and Ezra Collective were revealed only a few weeks before people set up camp. This year, the four-day programme ran from August 8-11, taking place at Matterley Estate, just outside Winchester. Boomtown is often categorised as a drum’n’bass event, but with 12 main stages spanning several genres, there’s something for everyone. PAUSE arrived on Friday the 9th to enjoy Relentless’ full-day takeover at the ‘Wrong Side Of The Tracks’ stage.

Rain and mud are practically guaranteed at British festivals, so the wet weather from the night before did little to dampen spirits. By the time PAUSE reached the ‘Wrong Side Of The Tracks’ stage, the sun was at its peak and the mood was equally as high, with crowds dancing and singing along to Vanessa Maria’s nostalgic track selection. Before her set, Freeform mentee, Konetix, set the high-octane tone with his explosive drum’n’bass sound. The Freeform Forum initiative, launched by Relentless, was designed to empower artists to push their creative boundaries. Konetix is just one of the young creators who has benefited from the programme, under the mentorship of leading industry experts.
The festivalgoers’ energy didn’t waver – maintained by free Relentless drinks and an electric atmosphere. Many more talented DJs graced the ‘Wrong Side Of The Tracks’ stage; Papa Nugs, Neffa-T, Redlight, DJ Q B2B Miley Serious, Total Science, Charlie Tee, Fixate B2B Sully, Spinscott and Mantra B2B Equinox Ft GQ, keeping the dancefloor filled from Friday afternoon to the early hours of Saturday.
After a day packed with thumping basslines and avant-garde theatricality, this PAUSE reviewer headed home with a head full of happy memories and a strong impulse to secure tickets for 2025.
