Saul Nash Brings Movement to V&A Fashion in Motion

Performance meets fashion.

On Friday 6th March, London based designer Saul Nash presented a specially commissioned live performance at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, marking the latest instalment of the institution’s Fashion in Motion series.

A trained dancer, Nash has long centred movement within his creative practice. His collections prioritise breathable fabrics and kinetic cuts designed to offer freedom and fluidity to the wearer. Performance has remained a consistent element of his runway shows in both London and Milan, often featuring dancers to communicate themes of spirituality, metamorphosis and the evolving identity of the modern man.

For Fashion in Motion, Nash choreographed a performance staged three times throughout the day at 3pm, 5pm and 8pm, free to the public. The piece responded directly to the setting of the Raphael Court, surrounded by the seven Raphael cartoons dating from 1516 and a golden Spanish altarpiece.

Working with eight dancers, many of whom have appeared in previous shows, Nash created a ritualistic atmosphere. Initially dispersed among the audience, the performers gradually moved onto the stage before forming a collective movement sequence set to a live sound installation by Azekel.
