Martin Margiela Puts Part of His Personal Archives Up for Sale

More than 200 pieces from the designer's personal collection head to auction in Paris

Martin Margiela is opening up his personal archives for the first time, unveiling a landmark auction that offers an unprecedented look into one of fashion’s most influential and enigmatic careers.

Organised by Maurice Auction in collaboration with Kerry Taylor Auctions, the sale will feature more than 200 items spanning 1984 to 2008, tracing Margiela’s journey from his early designs for Antwerp’s Canette d’Or through to his departure from Maison Martin Margiela. The collection includes photographs, drawings, objects and personal memorabilia, many of which have never been publicly displayed before.

Described as a first in fashion history, the auction marks the first time a living designer has directly collaborated with an auction house to sell items from their personal archive. In a statement, Margiela explained that after years of moving and loaning archival material, he decided it was time to share part of his collection with institutions and collectors.

Among the highlights are some of the designer’s most recognisable creations and personal artefacts, including his original 1987 presentation dossier, a personal white atelier coat worn throughout the Maison Martin Margiela years, early veil studies, graffiti-covered Tabi boots and a series of miniature recreations of past designs.

The sale also carries a more intimate dimension through the inclusion of the Hermès wardrobe of Margiela’s late mother, Léa Bouchet. Comprising clothing, accessories and footwear gifted to her during his tenure at the French luxury house between 1997 and 2003, the pieces offer a rare glimpse into the designer’s personal life and family history.

Ahead of the auction on 9th July 2026, the collection will be exhibited in Paris from 4th to 8th July in a scenography conceived by longtime friend Bob Verhelst, allowing visitors to encounter the archives in an environment designed to evoke the unwrapping of long-preserved objects.

Martin Margiela will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale to an association dedicated to the fight against AIDS.
