From the dojo to the court...
Queen of the fashion court, Naomi Osaka, walked (or should we say owned?) on the Wimbledon court in a custom ensemble by Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi. Inspired by Japanese ceremonial dress, the kimono was accentuated with cranes, cherry blossoms, and a maximalist bow. A Kanzashi hair ornament and Mikimoto pearl jewellery completed her look.
Incorporating Osaka’s Japanese heritage with Wimbledon’s strict all-white dress code, her creative director Marty Harper struck a respectful balance. He mentioned that “Wimbledon is one of the few places in sport where ceremony still feels inseparable from competition. We wanted to acknowledge that while creating a dialogue with Japanese ceremonial dress.”
Designed to accompany Osaka throughout the tournament, the nine components of her kimono were made of Velcro, making it easy to take on and off. Even her ten-foot train can be shortened to create different styles. Japanese floral handiwork (kirigami) extended to her Nike sports dress with a micropleated curved hem.
She captioned her photoshoot with “Silly rabbit ⚔️” – a phrase commonly cited in Japanese anime culture but originally taken from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill (2003). Osaka said that she felt like O-Ren Ishii, a character from the film, and we can totally see why.
